Synopsis

In the heart of Louisiana, the most powerful people in the South live behind elegant gates, mossy trees, and pleasant masks. Once every ten years, the pretense falls away and a tournament is held to determine who will rule them. The Acquisition is a crucible for the Southern nobility, a love letter written to a time when barbarism was enshrined as law.

Now, Sinclair Vinemont is in the running to claim the prize. There is only one way to win, and he has the key to do it — Stella Rousseau, his Acquisition. To save her father, Stella has agreed to become Sinclair's slave for one year. Though she is at the mercy of the cold, treacherous Vinemont, Stella will not go willingly into darkness.

As Sinclair and Stella battle against each other and the clock, only one thing is certain: The Acquisition always ends in blood.

My Review

Counsellor is book one in the Acquisition Series by Celia Aaron. It is a dark romance novel.

“I let the pain flow into me, trapping it inside a box in my heart. I’d store it up, feed it, make it grow stronger until it turned into rage.”

Stella’s father has found himself on the wrong side of the law and is likely to go to prison for these actions.  Sinclair is the prosecuting lawyer in her father’s case. He is out for blood but will make an exception on his terms. He is brooding, dark, and lays a path for destruction for the one caught in his sights, Stella.

“He was the spider I’d always imagine him to be, lethal and beautiful.”

Sinclair Vinemont.  Tall, dark, handsome, well built, and southern drawl.  That just melted half of America. But, this story was not as simple as the black and white love story that is found in many romance books.  It was adult Hunger Games on crack.  It was a story of horror and the unimaginable. The characters were chameleons, making me constantly question their intentions and loyalties.   As the story progressed, I could feel the walls closing in on Stella. Sinclair’s feelings for her were a juxtaposition of hot and cold, and created a shift in the atmosphere each time he was present.  In any other book, the introduction of lavish indoor and outdoor scenery would have led to a setting that was likely to give a beautiful story of love and devotion. But, not so here.  It was a contrast to the darkness that blanketed each page, and  I COULD NOT stop reading. The pied piper was playing his tune, and I mystically marched to the rhythm.  I could not flip the pages fast enough, each word ignited more hatred, sadness, questioning, longing, and fright, landing me in an ending that suspended me on the edge of a steep cliff; such a glorious and torturous sloping cliff.  I am glad book 2, Magnate, has already been released, and I will be deviating from my reading schedule to devour it.

About Celia Aaron

Hi, I'm Celia. Nice to meet you. Can you keep a secret?

I write smut. Gritty, dirty, delicious smut. This is a secret we can share. I'll do the writing. You do the reading. We have to keep our relationship quiet because I have a highly respectable day job. At night, I become markedly less respectable, as you will see.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy my stories. And remember, it's our secret.
