Synopsis

Bane
Naked surfer. Habitual pothead. A con, a liar, a thief and a fraud.
Last I heard, he was extorting the rich and screwing their wives for a living.
Which is why I’m more than a little surprised to find him at my threshold, looking for my friendship, my services, and most puzzling of all—looking humbled.
Thing is, I’m on a boycott. Literally—I cut boys from my life. Permanently.
Problem is, Bane is not a boy, he is all man, and I’m falling, crashing, drowning in his sweet, perfect lies.

Jesse Carter
Hot as hell, cold as ice.
I wasn’t aware of her existence until a fat, juicy deal landed in my lap.
She’s a part of it, a little plaything to kill some time.
She is collateral, a means to an end, and a side-bonus for striking a deal with her oil tycoon stepdad.
More than anything, Jesse Carter is a tough nut to crack.
Little does she know, I have the teeth for it.

My Review

Bane by Author L. J. Shen is book four in the Sinners of Saint series. It is a contemporary romance with a thread of the forbidden. It can be read as a standalone.

“The queen is more powerful than the king.”

Bane. Cocky. Conniving. Con. Jesse. Hurt. Dejected. Weary. What a combo! The anti-hero and the broken girl. The man who had dreams, but a strange way of making them happen. The young woman who had her dreams violently ripped away. What a devastatingly beautiful crash into love waiting to shatter our hearts.

“…I’m here for you, Snowflake. I’ll be sitting on the sidelines cheering for you because you’re the strongest girl I know, but I’ll also be there if you need me. Needing someone wouldn’t make you any less strong, Jesse. It would just make you human.”

I have devoured every Sinners of Saint book Author L. J. Shen has gifted us. In this installment of the Sinners, I clawed at the pages and absorbed every word. I loved Bane. I hated Bane. I loved how he coaxed Jesse out of her shell. I hated how he coaxed her out of her shell. I loved how he helped her reconcile the “old” Jesse. I hated how he helped reconcile the “old”Jesse. Do you get it?!? This man made me all kinds of twisted in the head. He was everything your mama ever warned you about. He was the bad boy that wouldn’t quit.

“Maybe that was the difference between Bane and all the others. I didn’t want him. I needed him to remind me how to breathe.”

Just as strongly as I felt for Bane, I was even more enamored by Jesse. She had every right to play the victim. And although we may have seen that from her at one time, when the spell was broken, and she could see more clearly, she was empowered for change. Every fiber of my being rallied for her and with her as she navigated her path through hurt, fears, and love.

“You can’t be afraid of love, my dear. It’s like being afraid of death. It is inevitable.”

Bane was a story of strength in weakness, truth in lies, and passion in indifference. It submerged us in a forbidden and searing hot love that broke all the rules.

“The princess’ sword was bloody. But she refused to tuck it back in. She wanted to leave a trail of their misery behind her, so they could always find her.”
