Synopsis

Toby Hawthorne was an enigma.
One I didn’t factor into my college plans.

I wasn’t looking for love.
I wasn’t not looking for it either.
And in that state of in-between, he found me.

Unaware of the battle he fought everyday, I fell fast.
By the time I found out, it was too late.
Because I wanted everything.
Every broken, lost part of him.

I knew I couldn’t fix him.
I could only love him.
But I should’ve known better than to think that was enough.

My Review

Bittersweet Always by Author Ella Fields is an NA, college romance.  It is a complete standalone, but does have characters previously introduced in the Suddenly Forbidden novel.

“…even among all the chaos, my soul will always recognize yours.” He kissed my hair again. “Never doubt that, no matter what.”

Oh, sweet mercy.   It felt so good opening the first page of this novel.   I loved Pippa and Toby in Suddenly Forbidden.   They were the glue that made everything stick. Author Ella Fields has a way of making the reader indelibly connected to her characters.  Even if I had not seen Toby and Pippa in her previous novel, I would have quickly embraced them with open arms in this novel.

“…life will happen. Happen with it, but … don’t let it change who you are.”

Although I have read stories before with a character whose life has been affected by mental illness, this was Toby and Pippa.  It was different.  These were two old souls whose love should transcend time and space.  They were the insta-connect that didn’t seem awkward, but like they were just picking up from another lifetime and intimately reacquainting themselves with one another.

“You know my soul, and I know yours. There’s no coming back from that. There’s no removing you from me. I’ve tried, and it’s futile.”

Toby was an unapologetic, sentimental fool for Pippa. In public, he kept up appearances, after all, he was the star quarterback of his college football team.  But, in private, she consumed him.  This was so swoony.  I loved how he knew special things about her. He noticed. He paid attention.  And she did the same. They complimented each other.

“Always. What I feel for you is beyond love. It’s vast, endless, and it’ll always hold me prisoner.”

Every part of their love called to me. The easy.  The hard.  The magical connection.  All of it made their story personal.  It made their attraction tangible.  It made their love one I couldn’t let go of.  One that broke me.  One that made my heart ache like a hole had been punched straight through it, leaving behind so many overwhelming emotions.

“…what I need is for you to love me loudly again. What I need is all of you.”

Bittersweet Always was a profound love story that was beautifully raw and painfully alive.  Another wonderful novel by Author Ella Fields.

“I will not fall victim to the undertow, for I am unsinkable.”
