Synopsis

Paris is home to runaways and lost souls, romantics and artists. A lover’s paradise. For Lilith Damewood, Paris is tainted, tarnished, corroded. Trying to claw her way out of her dark memories, she channels her vitriol into her photography.

Salem Tempest is a seminary student entrusted with the souls of Notre Dame de Paris—even the dark ones. When an unlikely friendship forms between the two of them, and a revelation shakes them both to their core, Lily and Salem find themselves connected in powerful and unexpected ways.

Lily risks his ruin—and her own.

After all, even holy men can fall. And salvation may be closer than they realize.

HEATHENS is a dark romance that connects five souls in a web of choice, sin, revenge, and redemption. It may be considered blasphemous to some. It is intended for mature readers.

HEATHENS is book 1 in the HEATHENS duet. BELIEVERS, book 2, will be releasing early 2018. Both books can be read as a standalone.

My Review

Heathens by Amanda Richardson is book one in the Heathens Duet. It is a dark romance novel with taboo elements.

“I am merely a caged hawk, examining and learning my prey. A queen of deception. One day, I will find a way to attack where they least suspect it.”

Tragedy struck in Lily’s life when she least expected. Youth and innocence now lost, she clings to her plan for revenge.

“When was the last time you believed in something so fiercely that you were willing to look past everything else?”

Salem was once on a different and destructive path. But then he find purpose and a calling, a way to atone for his sins.

“In a world where everyone wears a mask, it’s a privilege to see a soul.”

I went into this book pretty much blind. Having never read this author, I requested to read this novel based on the blurb. But, after that, I never went back to the synopsis because I wanted to be surprised….surprised does not even cover my reaction when reading this novel. Shock, awe, astonishment…all of these.

“You never really know a person until they show you their soul.”

The way the author chose to set up this story was originally a bit perplexing to me. Reading further into the story, I got it. What a brilliant tactic! Although not a typical writing/reading pattern, this perspective made the intensity of the story come to life in an even greater measure.

“Instead of slaying my demons, I like to open them up and find out what makes them tick.”

The moments of suspense came in waves. I’d think that I knew everything, and then another twist in the mystery that surrounded Heathens would surface. Feeling as though I went from the ride of a crazy roller coaster to being on pins and needles, I read, single-minded in my pursuit of the next thrill, the next secret revealed, the next bomb to be dropped. It was exhilarating!

“Until now, I was scared to reveal the darkest parts of me to the lightest person I’d ever known. I was terrified he’d run away, cut me out of his life, and I’d lose the best thing that’s happened to me in a long time. Instead, he took hold of that darkness—the one that overtook me at times—and swallowed it. Swallowed it whole.”

Through tragedy and despair, Author Amanda Richardson cultivated a chilling and eye-opening story of broken souls, shattered lives, fate, and the redeeming power of love.

“Thank you for pulling the storm out of me, over and over again.”

About Amanda Richardson

Amanda Richardson is an award-winning travel writer turned indie author living in Los Angeles with her husband and two cats. When she's not writing or reading (which, let's be honest, accounts for 95% of her free time), she can be found Googling cheap flights to places she's never been, talking to her cats, or obsessing over the British Royal Family. Fun fact: her first novel is about the Tudors. One day maybe, after a lot of wine, she might find the courage within her to publish it!
