Synopsis

Simmer (verb): to stew gently below or just at the boiling point; to be in a state of incipient development

My life was always at a simmer… only stewing, never going anywhere. I was left to fend for myself when it came to affection or love, so I learned to go without.

I refused to let them see how broken and lonely I was; it was much easier to hide behind a false reality. I didn't want anyone's pity. I didn't need it. Pity wouldn't put food on the table or keep a roof over our heads. That was all me.

Now, I have a second chance at a dream long forgotten. It demands hard work and sacrifice—with absolutely no distractions. A recipe I already know all too well, raising a daughter on my own.

Drew Kostas is everything I’ve ever wanted but couldn't let myself have. He’s younger, gorgeous, charming—and relentless. He sees beyond the hardened shell I’ve built to protect myself, coaxing out a softer me I don't recognize.

It doesn't matter how I melt in his presence when the heat between us threatens to boil over.

That's the thing about heat. When it rises, everyone gets burned.

Especially when they're foolish enough to fall in love.

My Review

Simmer by Author Stephanie Rose is a friends-to-lovers novel.  Some characters do appear in  Rewrite, one of this authors previously published novels.  However, Simmer can be read as a standalone.

“I had so much to atone for and the path to redemption was long and uphill.”

Sara’s life has not been easy.  Her one saving grace is Victoria, her little light in the darkness.    She wants to make a better life for them, and she is determined to make that dream a reality.  But, Sara had no idea she’d run into a man like Drew. One she couldn’t escape.   One she didn’t want to escape. One who made her have bigger dreams.

“After tonight, you won’t remember anyone else but me.”

Author Stephanie Rose’s novels always promise a few things:  happily-ever-afters, hot and swoony heroes, and strong heroines.  These are just a few of the reasons I am drawn to her novels.  But in Simmer, we get more. This story was inspirational. It gave us a reason to hope and dream.  It threw caution to the wind and created a love that seared us to the core and healed the hurts in the process.

“Drew was an adorable contradiction. He was a sweet and funny nerd, his favorite past time teasing me. He also dripped sex, and my traitorous body wanted nothing more than to lick it up.”

We had previously seen Sara in Rewrite. She was the brash and matter-of-fact mother to Victoria.  Making it as a single mother had been difficult for her.  While we continue to see these parts of her in Simmer, the author gives us depths and layers that make us inextricably attached to Sara.  With the addition of Drew, the young, care-free, drop-dead-gorgeous, heart throb, we see a carnival of emotions and desires that continually reverberate on a live wire between these two.

“Fire and ice. You show ice to everyone else, but I see fire. I see … I see so much.”

I LOVED this novel! I loved the slow burn. I was completely charmed and seduced by Drew.  Victoria held me under her own spell.  And Sara, the hate-to-love-you heroine, gave me the greatest thrills. While she remained true to herself, she also allowed herself freedom.

“Nothing we do could be wrong if we’re together. Numbers don’t matter, not in time or age. What we have is timeless.”

Simmer challenged us to dream dreams, look for the unexpected, and hope for life’s best.  It was a story that made the impossible possible and overwhelmed us with a love that branded it in our hearts.
