Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Mercedes Ayres has an open-door policy when it comes to her bedroom, but only if the guy fulfills a specific criteria: he has to be a virgin. Mercedes lets the boys get their awkward, fumbling first times over with, and all she asks in return is that they give their girlfriends the perfect first time- the kind Mercedes never had herself.

Keeping what goes on in her bedroom a secret has been easy- so far. Her absentee mother isn’t home nearly enough to know about Mercedes’ extracurricular activities, and her uber-religious best friend, Angela, won’t even say the word “sex” until she gets married. But Mercedes doesn’t bank on Angela’s boyfriend finding out about her services and wanting a turn- or on Zach, who likes her for who she is instead of what she can do in bed.

When Mercedes’ perfect system falls apart, she has to find a way to salvage her reputation and figure out where her heart really belongs in the process. Funny, smart, and true-to-life, FIRSTS is a one-of-a-kind young adult novel about growing up.

My Review

Firsts is the debut novel by Author Laurie Elizabeth Flynn.  It is a standalone, YA story.

“It’s funny how giving up control can actually end up putting things back in place.  But that’s what I’m learning, that too much of something ends up yielding the opposite reaction.”

Told in first person point of view, Firsts was the story of a misguided young girl who needed control in her life, regardless of the consequences. Or maybe that’s just what it would seem for unfeeling individuals who couldn’t look past the hologram of what she wanted you to see. Mercedes had secrets, beginning at a very young age. She felt powerless to trust and hope. So she overlooked living, her friends, and herself to create a world in which she could survive.  Firsts is a story that will make you remember the years of being a teen.  How awkward it felt. Wanting to fit in. Wanting to find acceptance, and wanting that on only your terms.
I thought that Firsts was very interesting take on how life shapes people, even at a young age. From the very early pages in the story I wanted to be able to offer Mercedes a better way than the path she had chosen; she was such a fragile, but strong-willed character.  Author Elizabeth Flynn offered other wonderful main and secondary characters that greatly contributed to the overall feel and developement of the story, and helped guide Mercedes in her journey. They were friends that loved and respected her inspite of her actions.  They were able to see past the outside facade and gave her story a whisper of hope, that turned into a hill of trust, and finally into a mountain of self-respect. A true transformation of the most spectacular kind.
