Synopsis

As the oldest son of a Chicago crime lord, Robert Delgado always knew how dangerous life could be. With his mother dead and his father in prison, he’s taking charge of his family’s safety—putting himself and his siblings in witness protection to hide out in a backwater Florida town.

Fourth grade teacher Adri Wilson is worried about the new boy in her class. Sherm is quiet and evasive, especially when he’s around his even cagier older brother. Adri can’t help her attraction to Rob, or the urge to help them both in whatever way she can.

But the Delgados have enemies on two sides of the mob—their father’s former crew and the rival family he helped take down. It’s only a matter of time before someone finds them. And if Rob isn’t careful, Adri could end up in the crossfire...

My Review

“Love makes you vulnerable. Never forget that.”

Outside the Lines by Lisa Desrochers is book one in the On the Run series.   It is a mafia romance novel.

“When I was nine, I was still innocent too.  Sixteen years later, I can’t even see innocent in the rearview mirror anymore.”

Rob and his family have just been transplanted to Port St. Mary, Florida after things went bad with  the mafia.  All of their lives have changed, and it seems not for the better. We meet all of Rob’s siblings and are given some insight into where they have been, where they are now, and will find out what their futures hold.

“The Hormone Portal strikes again.”

I love reading a book with deal-breakers and game-changers.  That’s what we get from Author Lisa Desrochers in Outside the Lines. Told in dual points of view, this was a fast and captivating read that abounded with surprises, both in the sense of the mafia ties, but also in the way of personal relationships.  The characters in the story were so easy to connect with. Although they ranged in age from very young to much older, each character had their own unique qualities that charmed me as the reader. My favorite character, outside of Rob and Adri, was Sherm. That little boy melted my heart and made me want to give him a hug. His own personal fight added such depth to the story. He was the meeting place for Rob and Adri, and also the heart of their family. The intense longing that Rob and Adri had for one another and their need to capture the time they had with each other gave even more of a sentimental and beautiful feel.  Despite all the odds, they persevered, and with that came the inception of something out of the ordinary, hope for a different and better life.

“…one thing I know, I’m never going to forget this man or the way he makes me feel.”
