Synopsis

No matter how hard I’ve tried to let go of Mister Black, the memories of us together torture me. They’re an unforgettable reminder of a life I can’t have for many reasons.

Burying myself in work mostly keeps thoughts of him to a screaming minimum, until he's thrust into my life under circumstances beyond my control. Despite my need for his protection, this time I’m not sure if I’m strong enough to survive with my heart intact.

He is Black: a fierce protector and irresistible charmer.

I am Red: a trouble magnet and rainbow weaver.

Together we ignite. Explosive colors merging at the hottest melting point.

Review

Author P. T. Michelle has written a spectacular conclusion to her In the Shadows SeriesBlackest Red rendered me speechless as it displayed all the pieces of the puzzle from past to present, arranged them in perfect order, and put them together to make a breathtaking finished piece.

Two parts of a whole can only stray so far apart before a force pulls them back together.  Destiny has forced Natalia and Sebastian to meet at critical times in each of their lives.  But, fate is holding all the cards and is the final determiner for our two main characters.

“When you need me most, I’m here, Little Red.”

Natalia Lone

Talia. She’s had a stressful day.  Trying to release a book, dealing with her own job responsibilities, and now this.  Some psycho is writing her letters about the release of her book.  She can find help for that.  But in walks the man who may be of more danger to her than a letter-writing psycho, Sebastian Black. The day has just gained an edge that may cut her deep.

“He exudes an alluring, indescribable intensity. We have an edgy connection that I can’t deny, but he definitely represents heartbreak, and potential all-out devastation if I let myself get sucked in even deeper this time.”

Sebastian Black

He is Talia’s quicksand.  One foot in that door and she’s a goner.  He is everything she has ever wanted, and he wants her as well. But, he will only give so much before he retreats, and Talia can’t possibly take the yo-yo effect that this game will have on her heart.

“She and I feel…unresolved.  I’ve never been with a person that left me feeling like that before.”

It’s been six months since they last saw each other.  But, in a just a few short texts we know that they never got each other out of their systems. Here they are, together again, match meet explosive. Things are about to get hazardous up in here. Strange occurrences begin taking place, and we become aware of just how many people Talia may have rubbed the wrong way in her line of work.  However, she has a great deal of support to get her through this night and the following week of events.  Her best friend, Cass, will be her sidekick, both close-up and from afar, lending her support and advice. Her co-worker and boss’s son, Jared, seems to be enamored by her and will likely stay glued to her side. And, of course, Sebastian, her protector and shield.  Other notable characters are Nathan, Talia’s ex-boyfriend, Vanessa and Charlie, Talia’s aunt and her aunt’s friend, Kayla, Talia’s assistant on her book tour, and Mina, Sebastian’s sister.

This first night of the tour is full of surprises from many angles, and sets the stage for the entire story.  Talia struggles to maintain control on all levels, and is further challenged the following morning when whisked away to an unplanned meeting, making some personal stops along the way.  It is during these hours that we begin to feel a deeper sadness for and closeness to Talia.  Her younger life caused an inexplicable amount of grief and heartache. But, in these times, Sebastian’s light always found her.  Now, Sebastian details for us his most recent impression of Talia. We also become more engaged with him in his past. He wants answers and is willing to do whatever necessary to get them. He and Natalia are more alike than they want to believe. Both with mysterious pasts, both trying to keep the darkness from overtaking them, and both allowing some part of that to control them. But not all their memories from the past are loathsome. The recent past has afforded then some great memories together which they continue to dance around and flirt with, like playing with fire. We just hope they don’t get burned. As we continue in the story Talia is thrust deeper into danger, and more easily looks to Sebastian as her anchor. But the one part she needs to hold her to the ground and simultaneously lift her from the past, he doesn’t seem willing to give. So, we watch as she is in a continual retreat from him. Although he feels that he can never give her everything, Sebastian won’t stop until she gives into him one more time.

“I’m reminding you what us feels like.”

This is the line that began to change it all for me. Experiencing this moment of pleasure with them is like nothing else. They are both vulnerable and aching for the other. Their further terms for an encounter made me shake my head in disbelief. It was like watching a tandem dance between two people that are harmoniously in sync, but refusing to come together. And it was the dance of seduction. It was hot, sexy, erotic, and laced with a sweetness that made it irresistible. When they finally had a brief connection, it was no waltz, it was the dance of the Tango as their bodies came together in intimate embrace.   I was soaring as he showed her exactly how much he wanted her, ravaging her with looks and his mouth, which gave spoken and unspoken pleasure. It was so incredibly stimulating!!

“No more running. No more hiding your feelings from me.  You are going down, Little Red.”

Sebastian is on a final mission and will take his target. His plan is well-calculated and he knows just what he must do to impact Natalia in such a way that she loses all inhibition. He isn’t prepared for certain family interactions that occur.  Needing a break, Talia steps aside. The next scene is intense, but gives the push needed for Talia and Sebastian to finally get out of their heads and give into their desires. The pleasure that is given and taken now is ethereal, as they have crossed from one world into another just in time for the snowball effect of the final chapters.

I have read this entire series, hanging on the edge with every word and ending. I have wanted to see the good guy win and the bad guy burned. But, most importantly, I have ached for Sebastian and Talia to finally be together, uninhibited, nothing holding them back, only holding onto one another.  From the beginning, their story has been one of fairy tales. The damsel in distress rescued by her Prince Charming. And now in the end, Black and Red are my favorite colors.  The two “Lias” in the story tore me apart. I was in the room with Talia as she experienced this fateful day. I became angry with her, fearful for her, and grieved with her.  I was a total Talia fan-girl when her publisher announced her book’s rankings.  The love I witnessed pour from two damaged souls to others was nothing short of exquisiteness.  The rapid motion of events toward the end of the story was driving. I could not get from one page to the next fast enough. Sebastian’s words of firsts to Talia were my total undoing. The way in which P.T. Michelle wrapped up the story and delicately pulled in all edges, tucking them inside to make this superb finale was more than I could have hoped for.  I was privileged to read this story filled with passion, love, redemption, and resolution.

Sebastian’s thoughts about Talia that I echo for Blackest Red,

“Pure Perfection.”
