Synopsis

In this modern retelling of The Little Mermaid, a fisherman's daughter from an Outer Banks island untouched by time, meets the son of the North Carolina governor at a fancy party where she is working.

Laire, who wants more from life than her little island can offer, is swept away by wealthy, sophisticated Erik, who is, in turn, entranced by her naiveté and charm. The two spend a whirlwind summer together that ends on the knife-point of heartbreak and forces them to go their separate ways.

Years later, when fate finds them together once again, they will discover the terrifying depth of the secrets they kept from each other, and learn that shattered hearts can only be healed by a love that willfully refuses to die.

My Review

Don’t Speak by Katy Regnery is a second chance romance and part of her Modern Fairytale Collection.   It is a standalone novel.

Author Katy Regnery is a master of creating a story that allows for the perfect escape, making time non-existent and pulling my hand to invite me on a new fairytale journey. Although Don’t Speak had a bit of a slower start, it provided much-needed information that was necessary for the rest of the story.  I am a bit of a taboo junkie, so having that particular forbidden romance added to the story allowed for a higher level of angst to be thrown into the mix, giving the characters reasons to push the limits a bit and throw caution to the wind by testing the waters.

She was the missing piece of his heart, the joy of his soul, the very lifeblood of his being…

I was a huge Laire fan.  First, her name. Unusual, maybe even a little exotic.  So fitting for a young girl of mystery with untapped potential to set the design world ablaze. She was a complete enigma to Erik. Seeing him baffled by her was the nail in his love coffin. She was his, hook, line, and sinker, and I knew that discovering the hows and whys that made this happen would be a remarkable journey.

“…wherever you go, I go. Wherever you are, I’m home. And whatever happens, we’ll handle it together. Our rules.”

Author Katy Regnery eloquently told the story of two young adults, infected with forbidden love, but ready to make their own path to be together.   It made my heart pound hard, my breaths come quickly, and my emotions get all wound up.
