Lauren Layne’s latest novel about the healing power of redemption tells the story of a crush gone wickedly wrong, proving that what you want isn’t always what you need.

Growing up in New York, Michael St. Claire never expected to spend his twenties wearing cowboy boots. But that was before he learned about his real father, a total stranger with a family in Cedar Grove, Texas. Once in the Lone Star State, Michael meets Kristin Bellamy, who is exquisitely refined and everything Michael always thought he wanted in a woman. The only problem is that Kristin is dating Michael’s new half brother, Devon.

Kristin’s mouthy, curvy sister Chloe has always been in love with Devon Patterson. So when Michael offers to help Chloe break up Devon and Kristin, Chloe agrees to a deal that seems too good to be true. Before long, Chloe finally gets her man, only to make a startling discovery: She no longer wants the guy she had to fight for—she wants the one who stood by her side.

After all he and Chloe have been through, Michael swears he’s damaged goods. Can Chloe convince him that love is worth the risk?

Reading Crushed by Lauren Layne was a majorly emotional experience for me. I identified with the characters in a lot of ways. With Chloe, I understood exactly how she felt about being overweight and putting herself down before someone else could do it. It seems like those of us blessed with extra curves always seem to have the requisite beautiful stick- thin sister or friend. In this case, we are introduced to Kristin, Chloe’s sister, who is supposed to have everything and get everything she wants. In addition, we have Michael, the “beefcake” as Chloe calls him and on the outside, he seems to have it all as well. Finally, we have Devon, Kristin’s boyfriend, the golden boy, Chloe’s crush, etc. The one single thread that connected all of these people are that none of them were what they seemed on the outside. They all seemed to be suffering from these terrible life situations that just created one bad decision after another.
I was so proud of Chloe for taking control of her health, and as Michael would say, not to worry about what the scale said, but to just be healthy. That was one of the positive things in this book that I felt the author did such a great job in communicating to her readers. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and we don’t all have to be the same size, shape, color, etc to be considered beautiful. I will say that I completely understand Chloe’s emotional eating. It had to be hard to lose her best friend and who she thought was the man of her dreams to her sister.
In talking about the characters, I can’t forget about Michael. I felt so terribly for him. When the book first started, I could tell he was so empty inside. It took meeting someone like Chloe to get his butt in gear. The fact that he never seemed to get the girl along with the fact that his biological father was not the man who raised him; you can see why he never felt good enough for Chloe. I just wanted to kick the two of them in the pants throughout most of the book. It was obvious they were in love with each other and setting other people such as Olivia and Devon up on pedestals to avoid their real feelings. It took an ultimatum, a phone call to a long lost best friend, a former flame, and their significant others to get these two to see what was in front of them. And best of all, that little revenge plot Michael started out with…well that just fell by the wayside. Things like that happen when you are truly happy…you forget life’s little hurts or what seems like big hurts and what is most important such as true love, family, etc take the forefront.
I enjoyed this book immensely. I was a little in love with Michael before the first chapter ended, but I’m probably easy like that! lol. No, seriously, the author wrote some great characters that were multi-dimensional and the plot line was one that was unique…not one of the tired ones we see used in romance novels today. If I had anything negative to say, it would be that I wish we could have seen more of Michael and Chloe’s romantic relationship develop. Though we did see some at the end and in the epilogue, I wanted to see more romance between the two. Having said that, it was a great book and one little thing is not much to complain about. I would recommend this author to anyone looking for a funny and romantic, yet emotional read.
