She can forgive, but can she forget?

Some days, Everly still thinks she sees him. In the food court at the mall, or in a car speeding past as the light changes. It only lasts a second, but when it happens, she slips back to a time when she was ruled-and nearly ruined-by August Kincaid. And it doesn't matter that she's moved on, that she's about to marry another man. In those moments the only thing she can do to regain control is take a deep breath and remind herself that August can't hurt her-because he's in a coma. Except that he's not anymore.

August is awake. With no memories, he sets out to solve the mystery of his lost life. He unearths a photograph of a beautiful redhead named Everly and knows instinctively that she's the key. But when he finds her, the August she describes is more monster than man.

Tortured by the thought of having hurt her, August wants only to become the man Everly deserves. As the new August emerges, Everly glimpses the person she first fell in love with. But can she trust that this August is real? When the final secret of their shared past is revealed, one of them will make a choice that changes their future forever . . .

My Review

“I’d hope I would be the one to light his spirits and wash away his trouble, but someone had already beat me to the punch.”

Forgetting August is book one in the Lost & Found series by Author J. L. Berg. This is also the first book I have read by this author, and know that it will not be my last.

“Seems to me, if this is where you were supposed to be all along, how you got here would have been worth all the trouble.”

There’s a certain feeling and excitement one gets as a reader when you read the prologue to a book and it immediately grabs you, demanding your full attention. This is exactly what happened in the opening pages of Forgetting August. I immediately HAD to know more.

“I would never, ever belong to another person. For as long as I lived.”

First meeting Everly in the story, I was struck by her strength and resolve. I was not aware of what had shaped her to have these qualities, but fortitude is a quality I look for in female character. This also created a certain level of mystery that made me want to know more about her, immediately. As I read further and discovered more about her life, it became increasingly clear how she used the jagged edges of her past to shape and refine her present.
As devastating as it was to read Everly’s thoughts, the reality August offered was not pleasant either. I had mixed emotions for him, hurt, anger, but also felt that possibly he deserved some of this hell on earth. Coming to know him better throughout the story, my feelings toward him morphed into pity and sadness, as I longed for a redemptive outcome.
Written in dual points of views, Forgetting August slowly tore me apart. I was so conflicted. I knew what the “right” answer was, but seemed to take a liking to the alternative. In the midst of a struggling love story, there was a measure of mystery and uncertainty that twisted my insides. I clung to every scene, hoping it would bring stability and answers. My thoughts were wired, up until the very last scene, when I could no longer manage the emotional pull and broke. I NEED Remembering Everly, and can only hope for an ending that I’ve contrived in my head.

“I was on fire and His words were kindling, making me burn hotter and brighter.”
