Frankie Aleen, a Doberman-shifter, has lived her life in and out of both foster homes and animal shelters. Without a mentor to guide her through the trials of shapeshifting, she was left to struggle to find balance between that of human and dog. Five years ago, though, she ran away from Chicago and ended up in the quaint town of Woodland Creek, Indiana, at the age of seventeen and finally found a safe harbor. An owl-shifter, Otis Brock, took her in and has been a father figure to her ever since.

Even though Frankie, now a bartender, has a wild, rebellious streak, she feels obligated to seek out other abandoned shifters to provide mentorship of her own. Frankie’s safe haven is threatened, however, when teen shifters start turning up dead around Woodland Pond, and she makes it her mission to find the perpetrator and seek justice.

But when one of Woodland Creek PD’s finest, Detective Gunnar Mason, starts sniffing around, he begins to notice that each of the deceased teens are somehow linked to that of the sexy, mysterious bartender with a sharp tongue. He doesn’t want her out of his sight until he’s sure she’s not responsible for the deaths that are stacking up. Things aren’t what they seem in Woodland Creek and he’s sure that Frankie is harboring a dark secret—a secret that may be the key to solving the entire case.

Will Frankie become distracted from her quest for justice by the handsome detective that seems immune to her powers of intimidation? What will happen when Gunnar discovers secrets that weren’t ever meant to be uncovered by humans?

My Review

“Little women like yourself shouldn’t be answering the door to the big, bad wolf at two in the morning.”

Coming out of a bad situation and relationship, Gunnar Mason thinks he has just met the woman that can turn him every-which-way-but-loose. He has no idea how true that is. Frankie Aleen is different in every way. She is bossy, hot, and has no time for the game of love. Until she meets Gun. He pushes every one of her buttons, including the one that goes straight to her libido.

“I’m running free. Nobody controls me now.”

Written in  dual points of view, Running Free was a shifter story of finding love through and in spite of personal differences. It combined the fantasy of the shifter world with the reality of the human realm and created a story filled with mystery from past, present, and leading to to the future. I loved how gentle, yet alpha Gun was with Frankie, and the sweet name he used to tell of his love for her. It was a great treat when Author K. Webster brought in the concept of imprinting, especially with a character that seemed so unlikely to embrace that. The secondary characters also offered am interesting part of this story line and revealed to us more tender and possessive sides of our main characters. I am hopeful we might see more from that at some time in the future.

“When all this blows over, I don’t care what kind of animal you are…you’re still mine and I love you.”

My Review

“She is my destiny. She is the one my body demands.”

Sinful Instincts is Author J. D. Hollyfield’s contribution to the Woodland Creek series. It is an interesting take on a shifter story and couples mystery and danger with snark and sexy times.

“Every end he speaks is a weapon to my heart. Every word he conveys, I feel deep in my soul.”

Poor Emma. Her life pretty much sucks. She moved to Woodland Creek under a guise, and now finds herself alone and without anyone to support her emotionally. Roxsin is a hot as sin, out of this world man who is on quest for revenge to right the wrongs that have been done to himself and others. A forced meeting brings these two together, and we watch as they fight their own primal and basic instincts, while trying not to lose their objectives in the process.

“I’ve never felt like this. The pull, the urge to take someone and make them completely mine.”

Written in dual points of view, Sinful Instincts was sassy and sexy ride through shifterville. I never knew what would come from Emma’s next. It wasn’t that she didn’t have a filter, but Author J. D. Hollyfield offered up her unfiltered thoughts that made me squirm with delight and anticipation. Reading as Roxsin battled with his protective nature and desire for redemption made me so nervous. I kept saying to myself, “Pick the girl. PICK THE GIRL”. The choices they both made throughout the story kept me on my toes and led to a great ending.

“Your scent is like a drug for me. Every emotion, every release, it’s like an aphrodisiac I want to shoot into my veins. So addictive, that if I took you all in, it would bring me to my knees.”

A shifter made of stone. And wings.
A human bent on free love. And drunk.
Any joke could be made with those two lines.

But the town of Woodland Creek, it’s no laughing matter. Hostile and magical residents guard their secrets. It’s too easy to be found out.

When Isaac Stone first meets Kennedy Kirk, he’s tempted to shove her off the clock tower. After all, she is gripping his private parts to lean over and see his town. One little push is all it would take…

Isaac never anticipated he’d be the one to fall.

My Review

Gargoyle by Author Scarlett Dawn is my first read by his author. It was a mix of shifter heat and magic that lit up the pages.

The main characters in this story shifted in and out. But, two remained steady, Kennedy and Isaac. They had a chance and passion-filled meeting. As the story progressed, many new twists and characters were written in that gave us intimate views into the depths of unusual happenings and creatures surrounding Woodland Creek. We also learn interesting revelations of the past that bring relevance and closure to the future.

I enjoyed this book, and seemed to connect the most with it toward the last 50%. However, the entire novella was well written and sparked my imagination to grow. I have only read one other novel that had a Gargoyle theme, and it peeked my curiosity. This offering by author Scarlett Dawn has caused that to grow even more.

Bear with Me by Nicole Blanchard

It wasn’t until Sullivan Thomas lost her parents in a car accident that she learned about the gift she inherited from her mother—though it felt more like a curse. A single touch is all it takes for her to see the past, be it a person’s or an object’s. When Sully meets Declan, a rugged Woodland Creek local, she finds herself blissfully unable to read him and even though something about him screams danger, Sully surrenders to desire.

A bear-shifter with a violent past, Declan Cain lives a present void of emotional entanglements. His solitary life in the vast forests of Woodland Creek is all he needs. Though when he meets Sully, the last thing he wants to do is cut her loose.

When her gift shines light on Declan’s past, the two are thrown into a whirlwind of mystery and intrigue. Danger mounts and secrets are revealed and the two must decide if risking their hearts is a price too high to bear.

My Review

“As I leave everything I’ve ever known behind, I wonder if I’ll ever start to feel like the girl I was before my life fell apart.”

A family tragedy has caused Sullivan to move to Indiana.  This coupled with recent changes in her body has left her on edge, wondering what it all means and why she is experiencing it. Her first encounter with the people of Woodland Creek is a bit creepy. But, her second introduction to their male offerings is a dream come true.

“He wasn’t in my plans, but now I wonder if there wasn’t a reason that I wound up in Woodland Creek.”

Told in dual points of view, Bear with Me was a great first paranormal offering by Author Nicole Blanchard.  The moment Sully initially met Declan and the author used her words to paint a picture of his outward appearance, I was smitten. He was this alpha male who seemed to be the perfect combination of control and heat. The setting was so vivid, filled with beauty and dangers unaware. I’ve never read or thought about bears in the aspect of paranormal romance, but was held captive by the concept in this book.
