Heartless. Conceited. Shallow.
Three simple words to describe me.

I had everything a girl could ask for, yet nothing I truly needed.
I'd made peace with who I was and the expectations set upon me long ago.
Only to have that peace shattered when a nameless hero rode into my world.

I wasn't allowed to have him.
Too bad I never cared much for the word no.

Because I'd soon learn the hard way that too much self-indulgence could result in incurable consequences.

My Review

Cyanide by Author Ella Fields is book one in the Surface Rust series. It is a spin-off from her debut novel, Frayed Silk.

“Out of all the harmful things I could have ever done to myself, falling in love has got to be the worst. But some lessons need to be learned the hard way.”

To say Cyanide was a highly anticipated read is a gross understatement.  I HAD to have this book.  I love that in the two books I’ve read by Author Ella Fields, she has taken me by surprise.  Having read about Jared in Frayed Silk, I assumed in this novel that, regardless of the heroine, he would steal the show. However, Vera definitely pushed him to the limits and created a spotlight for herself. She could dish it out to him as quickly as she had to take it in.  Their attraction was explosive. Jared was the smooth-talking, fast action “Hero”, while Vera was the sassy-mouthed, self-protector.  These qualities put them on a collision course for a physical an emotional roller coaster. I love that Jared challenged Vera, and she baffled him.  I loved the push and pull between them that created. I was over-the-moon with all of the endearing things that Jared did for her.  How he made her laugh, cry, and see – really see – life.

“If you were a book, I’d read you, touch you, look at you every day and never get bored.”

My nerves were on constant alert with each read word.  I knew their circumstances, their obstacles.  They seemed insurmountable, and this made my heart ache. Two souls drawn together, connected by the hearts that beat in rhythm with one another.  Beautiful, sweet, sappy, and ridiculously hot, Jared and Vera were made to dance life’s journey together.

“Sometimes the things that make no sense can lead us to our greatest discoveries.”

Almost all stories have a twist.  Something to make you think, get the blood pumping. Cyanide had a twist that grew arms, reached out of my Kindle, forcefully grabbed my heart, and squeezed out blood, oxygen, life, and hope. I didn’t have sniffles, I had hiccup cries that wouldn’t stop, and my emotions were in ebb and flow until the very end.

“You had me at Jared.”

Cyanide was a cataclysmic hit on my heart. There are no words to adequately express what Cyanide did to spread glitter in my soul. Another must-read by this author.

5 Stars

He moves to unzip his fly, and I snap into action, stopping him. Biting my lip, I reach down between us and do it myself then tuck my hand inside his black boxer briefs. My eyes never leave his, so I catch every reaction my touch elicits. His nostrils and eyes both flare when my hand finds his velvety length. Rock hard with pre-cum resting at the tip. I swipe my thumb over it, and he visibly shivers. Grinning, I squeeze him gently and start to move my hand up and down, loving the way his breathing turns ragged until he stops me. “Shit, you gotta stop, or this will be over real quick.”

“Oh? What happened to all night?” I taunt.

He leans in to nip my bottom lip, and my panties grow even wetter. “Frost”—he tsks—“this is only round one.”

My breath hitches, but I try not to let any more surprise show and lift my thumb between us to my mouth, sucking his excitement from it and fluttering my lashes.

“Jesus fucking …” His mouth crashes into mine, rough hands tangle into my hair, and I hear the ting of my hair pins as they fall to the counter and floor.
