Are you a hero yet?
Her words rang in my head.
I wanted to be.
For you, I want to be, I told her in my dream, the dream where she kissed me again.
A hero-worthy kiss.
Stay safe, she had said. Come back to me.
My lips tingled.
The brush of hers over mine a memory held in the blackest of night,
the hottest of desert days,
and the cold-evil hell of war against hidden enemies.
I wanted another chance to taste those lips,
melt them against mine,
and mold her body to me.
I wanted to live.
For Katie.

My Review

“Sweet Katie had no idea the looks she could give, melting a man and making him think of all kinds of sin.”

The History In Us by Author L. B. Dunbar friends-to-lovers and second chance at love novels.

“She wanted a hero and I promised myself I’d be one for her. I’d make her proud and return to her, hoping she remembered me. I’d be the hero a girl like her deserved.”

Levi Walker had been through hell and back when he decided to make a change in his life, not realizing all that would encompass. His one reason for living, his focus for surviving became a reality at a most unexpected time and place.

“Men fight battles for justice. Women fight for love.”

This History in Us was one of the most well thought out and executed stories of a broken hero and the woman who waited for him, believed in him, and loved him. Good golly! Levi Walker made my entire being hum. He was a vulnerable, sexy, and sweet man with intriguing secrets. He was everything he never thought he could be, he just didn’t see it. This man made my heart beat like a thousand drums. I loved Katie’s character. She was quiet, but her actions spoke loudly. She was not an extrovert to share herself freely, but when she did share herself and give her love, she loved hard. She found the good in others, even when she had to dig for it. She was a precious and rare gem, something set aside for greater things and bigger love.

“I’d never felt this way before, but if she’d let me caress her body, feel the warmth of her skin, and treasure her laying on my bed, I’d atone for all my sins.”

This entire story evoked such deep and raw emotions. There was a constant push and pull of desire creating a whirlwind of angst as the tortured pasts of these two young people who desperately wanted to make new roads for the future was revealed. At one point, I looked like one of those GIFs with the crazy girl and her eyes pouring like a water faucet. I was a freaking mess! I cried for past hurts, I cried for promised futures, I cried sappy cries for all the love that poured from both of these characters, even when they didn’t trust love. The words, and special moments and people, rocked me to the core and put a vice grip on my heart.

“Life is cake and cake is life, and you need to gobble the ingredients collectively to enjoy the whole.”

Grab your tissues, hold onto your heart, and get ready for a love story that will become your everything.

“History doesn’t come from perseverance, although that’s certainly part of the equation. History comes from love. Love of self, love of God, love of country, but most importantly, love to and from another person.”

About L. B. Dunbar

Avid drinker of Coca-Cola, L.B. Dunbar loves the sweet things in life. Her affair with all things romantic began with her first book at the tender age of six: Goldilocks and the Three Bears. One can never forget her first! From there, the reading journey includes a deep love of fairy tales, medieval knights, regency debauchery, and alpha males. She loves a deep belly laugh and a strong hug. Occasionally, she has the energy of a Jack Russell terrier. Accused, yes, that’s the correct word, of having an over active imagination; to her benefit, such an imagination works well. Author of over a dozen novels, she’s created small town worlds, rock star mayhem, and MMA chaos. Her other duties in life include: mother to four growing children and wife to the one and only.
