I joined the Cloister to find the truth. But I've discovered so much more, and the darkness here is seducing me, pulling me down until all I can think of is him. Adam Monroe, the Prophet's son, a dark prince to an empire that grows by the day. He is tasked with keeping me safe from the wolves of the outside world. But the longer I stay at the Cloister, the more I realize the wolves are already inside and under the Prophet's control. If Adam discovers the real reason I'm here, he'll bay for my blood with the rest of them. Until then, I will be Delilah, an obedient servant of the Prophet during the day and Adam's Maiden at night.

My Review

The Maiden by Author Celia Aaron is book one in the Cloister series. It is a dark romance novel.

“Protectors, lead your gentle lambs back to the Cloister where we will welcome them into the fold.”

When you open a book by a author Celia Aaron, you will literally step into the story setting and be enveloped by all that the senses can absorb. The Maiden catapulted me into a world that made my skin crawl, my stomach knot, and my crazy radar go off with ear-splitting alarms.

“Adam isn’t just any man. I know that now. He’s my weakness, the one thing that could derail my search for the truth.”

My heart broke for Adam. He was a fierce storm whose rotation was formed by an outside force, of which he had no control. All man. Very alpha. Only as much as he was allowed. But, I loved that he had lines. Hard limits.

“Delilah doesn’t have to pretend. No matter what words spill from her pale pink lips, she is my truth.”

Delilah’s story was equally as compelling and heart-wrenching as Adam’s. But I loved that she was “as wise as a serpent and yet as harmless as a dove.” She became what she never wanted to be because she had a heart. This was such a representation of her loyalty and courage.

“…the Prophet is the head of your life, the head of your household, and the head of your heart.”

There was a particular aspect of this novel that completely infuriated me. It wasn’t the writing, per se, but the subject matter. In particular cults that want to hide behind God and legitimize the horrible things they do. It was disgusting and made me grieve for the women who were used and abused for a cause that was a disgrace to true Christian beliefs. They put their faith in a man, a crazy, delusional, insane person. They walked blindly into his teachings. They fell into his trap. He was the epitome of evil and the sickness that is in our world. And I HATED him. With every fiber of my being I despised him. I loathed his words. Was disgusted by his actions. Infuriated by his perverse teachings.

“I am the poison that will drain her spirit, the wolf that will rend her limb from limb.”

But layered in with this nightmare of a setting was the pairing of an angel and a devil caught in a world to which neither really belonged. Because of this, the angst in the story was incredibly high and taut. Like one stroke the wrong way and the entire string would snap, leaving everyone falling out of purgatory and straight into hell.

“My mind repeats the sins of this place, of Adam. But my body is forever changed and so, I fear, is my heart.”

The Maiden was a harrowing novel overflowing with unease, suspense, and the unfathomable.

About Celia Aaron

Hi, I'm Celia. Nice to meet you. Can you keep a secret?

I write smut. Gritty, dirty, delicious smut. This is a secret we can share. I'll do the writing. You do the reading. We have to keep our relationship quiet because I have a highly respectable day job. At night, I become markedly less respectable, as you will see.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy my stories. And remember, it's our secret.
