A woman who almost had it all . . .

On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight-year-old woman could want: a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?

A man who was supposed to be her salvation . . .

Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a lethal cocktail of pills and vodka, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers a scandalous photograph in a lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine believed would change her life.

Until he became her ruin.

On the hunt for evidence that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer. A killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

My Review

He Will Be My Ruin by K. A. Tucker is a standalone mystery and suspense romance novel.

Celine and  Maggie became childhood friends and formed a lasting bond.  Neither time nor distance could diminish the bond they had with each other. Upon hearing of her friend’s death, Maggie takes some time away from her philanthropic quest to take care of her friend’s belonging. Reestablishing herself in Celine’s life, Maggie finds herself in a predicament that she did not envision, and decides to take on the task of finding redemption for her friend.

He Will Be My Ruin was a classic “who done it” book. Told in dual points of view, K. A. Tucker wrote a story of suspense, mystery, and lust that had my wheels turning on every page. I just couldn’t make all the clues come together. When they finally did, my head was spinning. I thought I had a good grasp on each of these characters and their roles in the story, but found out numerous times that I had no clue; this was one factor that made the story pulsate in my mind as I read. The other predominate feature was the determination that Maggie had to avenge her friend, regardless of and in spite of other’s opinions of her supposed foolishness.  Lastly, I was taken by the backstory of antiquities, which was an interesting and diverse topic in which to cloak the story.  Another riveting read for this author.
