My life had a plan. Until he invaded it and stole it all away. My captor took me and I became a pawn.

His strategy changed and he sent me away to WAR, because money is everything in this world.

In my WAR, though, I found peace.

I couldn’t help but find love where I least expected it, with a man who lived a battle every day of his life
…all inside his head.

But then my captor came back for me.
Yet, this time, battle lines had been drawn and I was protected.

So we thought.
Even though my WAR was raging,
my captor would fight to the death.

The good guys always win, right?
Not always.

All’s fair in love and WAR, right?
Not this time.

This is War, Baby is a dark romance. A really dark one. So dark you’re going to wish you had a flashlight to see yourself to the end and someone to hold your hand. Human trafficking, dubious consent, and strong sexual themes that could trigger emotional distress are found in this story. This story is NOT for everyone.

I received this book for free from Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

This book may be unsuitable for people under 17 years of age due to its use of sexual content, drug and alcohol use, and/or violence.

My Review

This is War, Baby is a new novel by Author K. Webster. It is a dark romance novel.

“Sometimes, sweetheart, you have to make sacrifices. You, doll, are a sacrifice. Your part is small, but it is so significant.”

Baylee is not your typical teen.  Yes, she has visions and dreams for her life.  But, she has underlying fantasies about her sexual encounters, who she is with, and who she secretly dreams of being in her body and bed. All of these musings come to an abrupt halt when she is taken, and her greatest pleasures and worst fears blur together before her eyes, along with the lines between those she loves and those she hates. We witness her fear, hate, lust, grief, and pain as extreme twists and potholes litter her highway to hell.

“In my world, timing is everything. The early bird may catch the worm.  But it’s the patient bird who wins the dirt and all the worms in it.”

Step one when reading this book, DO NOT MISS THE WARNING!  This is not a light and breezy romance. It is a dark, terrifying, tumultuous, eye-popping, head-spinning, and freakishly insane, but masterfully written read.  If you’re good with that, may I recommend you proceed to Step 2 and dive in!

“I could feel the dark, twisty parts of me infecting every cell, membrane, and bone in my body.  I was tainted.”

This is War, Baby had me all kinds of messed up in the most inappropriate and wickedly arousing ways. Wow!  Where to begin?  Baylee was not at all what I initially expected. She was vulnerable and fearful, but had this uncanny ability to turn on a dime and shock the living daylights out of me. Gabe was a demented maniac who thought with the head below his belt and only used the one above it when he was scheming. He was a true monster in every sense of the word, allowing his sick mind to justify his evil intentions. And War…my precious War. His cracked interior made me fall in love with him.  His frayed edges shed light on his reality, bringing to the surface his quirky nuances that, although somewhat oppressive, also added to his charm and attractive mind.

“After the hell I’ve endured the past few days, this is heaven. The devil is my savior.”

The progression of the story was fast and do-not-close-your-eyes-or-turn-out-the-lights crazy.

I seriously could not:

  1. Put the story down.
  2. Flip the pages fast enough.
  3. Pick my jaw up off the floor enough times.
  4. Get the images out of my head.
  5. All of the above and more.

Of course the answer is…1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.  Seriously, I screamed, hid under my pillow, cringed, checked for the boogey man, and decided on foods I would likely never ingest again.

“She’s the sun, water, and earth. And I’m a seed that has hope to grow into something strong and beautiful. Because of her.”

Even after these things, I kept reading and reading, because there was no way this book was going down without me hitting the final page and getting some much-needed closure from the chaos. Just when I thought I might finally reach the point of solitude, the “oh crap” and unthinkable moment happened, and my heart, jaw, sweat, and tears all fell to the ground, leaving me to feel as though I just finished a run through on the fast spin cycle.  Exhilarating and unbelievable.  If you love dark reads and/or really want a book that will challenge your mind and set your heart to racing at the speed of light, get This is War, Baby.

“The queen always protects the king. Even from himself.”
