We are told that God will punish the wicked. That sinful men will reap what they sow. We are told to scourge our souls with prayer and pain to become clean once again.

Well, here I am. Wicked and sinful. Desperate to become clean…even though it feels so good to be dirty.

But even I never expected what came next.

Even I never expected my punishment to come so soon.

***Midnight Mass is a novella and a sequel to Priest. It’s intended for mature audiences only.***

My Review

Priest was a novel published earlier this year that set me on fire. Taboo heaven!  So, it was with great anticipation that I opened the pages of Midnight Mass to discover who and what this story was about.

“I cultivate guilt the way a farmer cultivates land.”

Reading the opening pages of Midnight Mass, I assumed that this was going to be a nice “catch me up” story, and I, admittedly, felt a moment of disappointment. However, that was not the premise of this novella at all.
It offered a deeper inspection of the man who set our hearts ablaze in Priest,  giving us more reasons to respect and love him. As we read in Priest, the struggle between Tyler’s spiritual and physical man was tangible, and now continues. I was most impressed that, being told from Tyler’s point of view, the story had very sophisticated questions and answers regarding God, and a person’s relationship and struggles with Him. It was respectful and written in a well-educated manner.

“Father Bell was here instead. And church was in session.”

There was NO missing the sexual aspect of Tyler and Poppy’s relationship.  Thankfully, Author Sierra Simone continued with this side of our characters, while also showing us the real-life aspects of marriage, romance, and the ups and downs involved.  She handled each fragile moment with care and concern, but still allowed the emotions of the moments to come to the forefront.  This was a compelling continuation to the Priest series, and I hope for more in the future.

“…know that no matter what happens, we will endure it together.”
